From staff reports

GARNER -- Garner High School Principal Drew Cook has been named one of eight finalists for North Carolina Principal of the Year, state education officials announced Wednesday.

Cook was named the finalist for the state's north central region. A state selection committee will announce the winner April 5 in Raleigh.

Cook, 37, was a student at Garner High School and returned after college in 1997 to become a teacher. He was promoted from assistant principal to principal in 2009.

Credited with helping revitalize the school, he was named the Wake County school system's 2011 Principal of the Year in October. Cook said then that his philosophy is simple: "Kids will overcome all kinds of barriers to work for somebody who cares about them."
