The writer of the Jan. 27 letter "Public school tuition" states, "Parents of school-aged children must be required to pay the majority, if not all, of the cost of educating their children." I believe the writer is missing the point that all of society benefits from public school education.
Who does he think will provide the goods and services he will be relying on as he grows older? Who will be providing the technologic advances needed to solve this nation's problems? Also, democracy only works well when educated voters can think and make critical choices. Finally, did he benefit from public education? The way parents and children repay society for public education is to support the education of future generations, so he should not avoid this obligation.
I do not know what this individual would do with the money, if he did not have to support public education, but I would suggest that there is no more worthwhile investment. What I hate most about the current political rhetoric it that it appeals to Americans' worst, self-serving traits. Public school tuition is an oxymoron.
