Camels hold off Charleston Southern

BUIES CREEK -- Trey Freeman scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half and Campbell beat Charleston Southern 62-57 on Thursday.

Campbell (15-10, 9-4 Big South) took a 33-30 lead into halftime before pushing that to 58-51 with 3 minutes, 29 seconds left. From there, Charleston Southern scored six unanswered points to cut the deficit to 58-57 but Freeman made four free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the win.

Charleston Southern (14-8, 8-4) beat Campbell 91-73 on Jan 5.

Eric Griffin scored 13 for the Camels on 6-of-11 shooting. Griffin leads the Big South, and ranks seventh in the country, in field goal percentage (.624).

Saah Nimley led the Buccaneers with 14.

Winthrop 77, Radford 63: Andre Jones scored 17 and George Valentine had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead Winthrop (10-14, 7-6 Big South) at Radford, dealing the Highlanders their 19th loss in the past 20 games.

Javonte Green scored 18 for the Highlanders (4-21, 1-12).

Liberty 63, Gardner-Webb 58: David Minaya scored 16 to lead Liberty (9-15, 4-8 Big South) at home, sealing the sixth straight win for the Flames in the series.

Tashan Newsome scored 21 to lead Gardner-Webb (10-14, 5-7).

Samford 53, Appalachian State 50: Tyler Hood scored six of his 18 points during a go-ahead run to help Samford (7-15, 4-7 Southern Conference) win at Appalachian State.

Nathan Healy scored 14 points for the Mountaineers (9-12, 5-6).

UNC Greensboro 82, The Citadel 71: Trevis Simpson scored 23 points as host UNC Greensboro held off The Citadel to win its seventh straight game.

The Spartans (9-14, 7-4 Southern), who won their previous two games in overtime, also defeated the Bulldogs 67-66 on Jan. 14.

UNC Greensboro's winning streak is the second-longest of the school's Division I era, which began in 1991-92. The 1995-96 squad, which made the NCAA tournament, had an eight-game streak.

The Spartans led 39-29 at halftime, then stretched the lead to 12 points.

No. 10 Murray State 81, Southeast Missouri State 73: Isaiah Canaan scored 32 and Murray State remained unbeaten with the home win.

Jewuan Long added 13 points for Murray State (22-0, 10-0), which is off to the best start by an Ohio Valley Conference team since Western Kentucky opened 21-0 in 1953-54.

Marcus Brister had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Redhawks (12-10, 7-3).

Syracuse: Center Fab Melo has been reinstated and will play in the Orange's road game against St. John's on Saturday.

A 7-foot sophomore, he sat out the past three games, at Notre Dame and Cincinnati and at home against West Virginia on Saturday while resolving an academic issue.

Melo is averaging 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds and leads the second-ranked Orange with 60 blocked shots.

Syracuse (22-1, 9-1 Big East) went 2-1 without Melo in the lineup, suffering its lone loss to the Irish, 67-58, on Jan. 21.
