From staff reports

An Army pilot based at Fort Bragg will receive the Distinguished Flying Cross in a ceremony next week.

Maj. Brendan P. Murphy of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, will be recognized for "exceptionally valorous conduct in the face of the enemy."

According to an Army statement, Murphy, assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division during a deployment to Afghanistan, was in command of a Chinook transport helicopter Sept. 5, 2010, when he went in to reinforce ground forces and then extracted them. Flying in hazardous weather, Murphy saved the lives of more than 100 coalition forces, the Army said.

Lt. Gen. Frank G. Helmick, commanding general of the 18th Airborne Corps, will present the medal to Murphy during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday at the 82nd Airborne Division Museum in Fayetteville.

The Distinguished Flying Cross was created by Congress in 1926 to recognize heroism in flight.
