Millbrook escapes upset attempt

Millbrook held on to stop Leesville Road 67-63 in a Cap Eight 4A boys' basketball game Friday night.

Shi'Chee Moore scored 22 points for the Wildcats, No. 4 in the N&O. Carlee Clemons added 16 points for the Wildcats, who are 11-1 in the Cap Eight and 17-5 overall.

Leesville Road (7-12) got 15 each from Lemont Martin-White and Shyheid Petteway.

Mustangs stop slide: Middle Creek (15-7) ended a two-game losing streak with a 42-37 Tri-Nine 4A win against Athens Drive (10-10). The Mustangs led 21-15 at the half and have averaged only 43 points in their past three games.

Caps surge: Broughton outscored Wake Forest Heritage by 19 in the second quarter of a 61-37 Cap Eight 4A win. The surge helped the Caps (16-5 and No. 7 in the N&O) lead 36-18 at halftime. Chase Johnson had 13 points in the victory.

Mosser paces Falcons: John Mosser's 23 points helped Green Hope defeat Lee County 63-50 in a Tri-Nine 4A game. Chris Flemmings added 15 in the win for the 18-4 Green Hope, No. 6 in the N&O.

Ravens grab 30: Ravenscroft had 30 points in the first quarter of a 63-27 win against Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Association opponent Durham Academy. The Ravens, No. 5 in the N&O, led 43-10 at the half and substituted early. No Raven scored more than nine.

Evans gets 23: Logan Evans had 23 points in Wakefield's 67-47 Cap Eight 4A win against Enloe.

Comets up pace: Clayton scored more points in the third period than it did in the first half of a 71-54 win against Smithfield-Selma. The score was 24-24 at the half. Anthony Gaskins led the win with 21 points and Gary Clark added 15.

Outlaw leads Person: Tyrone Outlaw scored 29 to help Person hold off Durham Jordan 68-64 in a Piedmont Athletic 4A game.

Girls

Millbrook rolls: Millbrook, No. 1 in the N&O, held Leesville Road to eight second-half points in a 54-25 Cap Eight 4A win. Mykia Jones led the balanced Wildcats with 14 points.

Falcons fly: Green Hope led by 37 points at the half of an 82-36 Tri-Nine 4A win against Lee County. The Falcons led 49-12 at intermission. Kristen Gaffney, who leads the average with 26.6 points per game, scored 28 for the 20-2 Falcons, who are No. 2 in the N&O.

Caps start fast: Broughton built a 17-point lead in the first quarter of a 67-46 Cap Nine 4A win against Wake Forest Heritage. The Caps (18-4, 10-2) are No. 8 in the N&O.

Kelly leads Ravens: Freshman Erin Kelly, the younger sister of Duke's Ryan Kelly, knocked in 22 points in Ravenscroft's 48-45 win against Durham Academy. The Ravens missed some late free throws, but Taisha Murphy (18 points) hit some key free throws.

Wolverines balanced: Wakefield (14-6 and No. 12 in the N&O) had four players in double figures in a 59-46 Cap Eight 4A win against Enloe. MaKayla Williams led the win with 17 points. Enloe's Ebonie Coley led all with 20 points.

Northwood defends: Pittsboro Northwood, No. 10 in the N&O, held Durham Arts to six or less points in each quarter in a 55-23 win. Shelby Wolfe, who averages 17.6 points per game, scored 18 in the win.

Beuris nets 24: Madison Beuris scored 24 in Cardinal Gibbons' 56-42 Carolina 3A win against Northern Vance.

Harnett Central's Jackson scores 30: DeeAnneisha Jackson of Harnett Central scored 30, more than half of the Trojans' points in a 56-36 Greater Neuse 4A victory over West Johnston.

Tigers dominate: Chapel Hill (20-2) dominated Oxford Webb 74-38 in a Carolina 3A game. The Tigers, No. 4 in the N&O, led 38-11 at the half. Jamellia Smith had 14 points in the win. Ariane Jacobs, Catherine Romaine and Lila Scott had 10 each.

Hinnant bops Smithfield-Selma: Vernessa Hinnant scored 30 to lead Clayton to a 74-48 Greater Neuse 4A win against Smithfield-Selma. Sabrina Shepard had 25 in the loss.

1,000 points: Anna Green of Raleigh Grace scored her 1,000th point in a 53-19 victory over Wayne Christian. Green had 999 points and scored 14.
