Maryland sophomore guard Terrell Stoglin led his team with 20 points but, UNC coach Roy Williams said he felt like Stoglin had far more than that. Stoglin was the Terrapins' most active player, but the Tar Heels made him work for his points - especially in the second half. Though he scored 11 of his 20 points in the second half, Stoglin made just four of his 12 shots from the field and he had to fight for open looks against sophomore Reggie Bullock.
UNC point guard Kendall Marshall left the game with 8:34 to play after picking up his fourth foul. Marshall, though, wasn't on the bench for long. He returned with 7:18 to play and played the rest of the game without fouling out.
The Terrapins beat the Tar Heels to loose balls throughout the first half, but UNC increased its defensive intensity during the second. That was especially evident on the perimeter, where Maryland had few chances to shoot open 3-pointers. The Terps made three of their seven attempts from 3-point range during the first half, but were 1-for-10 during the second half. Stoglin especially struggled from the perimeter. He was 1-for-9 on 3s for the game, and 1-for-6 in the second half.
