Parents of 1,191 Wake County students have to reselect which middle schools they want their children to attend this fall because of a glitch in the school system's computer system.
The school system sent out email messages to the affected families over the weekend letting them know that an update to the computer software had reset their middle school choices. The families have until 10 p.m. Feb. 24 to reselect their choices at the district's school choice selection website, assignment .wcpss .net .
The problem affects parents of students choosing middle schools that have "split feeder patterns," meaning they send students to more than one high school. The middle schools affected are Carnage, Centennial, East Cary, East Millbrook, East Wake, Heritage, Holly Grove, Lufkin Road, Rolesville, Salem, Wake Forest-Rolesville, Durant Road, Wendell, West Cary and West Millbrook.
Before Friday, parents applying to one of those affected middle schools couldn't go on to select the appropriate high school pathway for their child. Wake updated the software Friday to correct the problem, but the change reset the middle school selections for the affected families who had submitted their applications before that date.
Although Wake tried to contact the affected families over the weekend, school officials say some couldn't be reached. Families are being contacted by telephone to alert them to the situation. They'll also get letters that will be mailed out today.
Families with questions about this process can contact the Office of Student Assignment at studentassignment@wcpss.net or by phone at 919-431-7333.
Since the application period opened Jan. 17, school officials say parents of 13,228 students have made choices for this fall. Under the plan, families who like their current school will be allowed to stay there without having to submit an application.
