Memphis is the latest school to sign up for a spot in the new Big East.

A person familiar with the decision said Memphis will join the Big East. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an official announcement was pending.

The Big East announced it would hold a teleconference today with Commissioner John Marinatto, University of Memphis President Shirley C. Raines and Memphis athletics director R.C. Johnson, though it did not give any details about what would be discussed.

Johnson said a news conference would be held in Memphis after the teleconference to discuss the university's athletic affiliation.

The source said the Tigers will join the league for the 2013-14 season and compete in all sports, becoming the fourth Conference USA team to move to the Big East within the past two months, along with Houston, Central Florida and Southern Methodist.

The Big East is trying to replace basketball powers Syracuse, Pittsburgh and West Virginia, and create a football league with at least 12 teams. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are leaving for the ACC and West Virginia is headed to the Big 12.

Cycling

Contador considers appeal: Alberto Contador of Spain vowed to return to the pinnacle of cycling, maintaining his innocence in the face of a two-year doping ban that stripped him of his 2010 Tour de France title.

He said he may appeal the ban handed down by sport's highest court and insisted even if the punishment stands he will return to challenge for more Tour titles. The penalty is retroactive and expires in August.

In Lausanne, Switzerland, the World Anti-Doping Agency urged U.S. authorities to quickly hand over evidence collected in their lengthy probe into seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and doping in U.S. cycling.

WADA President John Fahey said federal agencies in the United States gathered "significant evidence" in the criminal investigation that was abruptly closed last week with no charges filed.

Tennis

Sore back ends Li's day: French Open champion Li Na retired with a sore back against Tsvetana Pironkova in the second set of her opening match at the Open GDF Suez in Paris.

Fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic withdrew because of a left thigh strain she picked up during Serbia's 3-2 win against Belgium in the Fed Cup last week.

Charges dropped against Tide player: A misdemeanor drug charge against former Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has been dropped, court records show in Bradenton, Fla.

A court filing dated Feb. 2 said no criminal charges would be filed against Kirkpatrick, who will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft and is projected as a first-round pick.

Kirkpatrick was arrested Jan. 17 after Palmetto, Fla., police stopped a car driven by another former Alabama player, Chris Rogers, for driving on the wrong side of the road. A police report said an officer found marijuana on the floorboard of the passenger side at Kirkpatrick's feet.

South Carolina named Chris Rogers, a compliance director for football and six other sports at Ohio State, the Gamecocks' new head of compliance. Rogers will take over for Jennifer Stiles, who was demoted after her office signed off for reduced hotel rates for athletes that ended up being major NCAA violations.

Obituary

Soccer's Keough dies: Harry Keough, who played for the U.S. soccer team that famously upset England at the 1950 World Cup, died Tuesday at his home in St. Louis. He was 84.

His death was confirmed by son Ty Keough, who also played for the U.S. team.
