CARY -- The Wake County school board voted Tuesday to extend Superintendent Tony Tata's contract by six months. His contract will now run through December 2014.
School board Chairman Kevin Hill said the extension will align Tata's contract with his annual evaluation cycle.
Tata was hired by the former Republican school board majority in December 2010.
But last fall's election resulted in Democrats regaining the board majority, with none of the five majority members having voted to hire him.

A Wake County family has filed a complaint against the school system’s decision to suspend allowing elementary school students to take the new middle school math curriculum. 
Many who signed the petition praise Hankins’ leadership and cite a perception he was demoted because he is black, a charge that school board officials say is unwarranted.
