A star UNC-Chapel Hill wrestler was charged Tuesday night after police officers responded to a call of people fighting near the Varsity theater on East Franklin Street.

Corey D. Mock, 21, of 2511 Environ Way, was charged with simple affray and resist, obstruct and delay of a police officer, according to a Chapel Hill Police Department news release. He was released on a written promise to appear in court.

He has been indefinitely suspended from the wrestling program, said Dave Schmidt, UNC assistant director of Athletic Communications.

Officers who responded to the call reported seeing a large crowd and several people fighting. They then observed one man throw another to the ground before running from the area. Officers chased the suspect, later identified as Mock, and arrested him. Two officers suffered minor injuries during the chase, police reported.

Mock is a sophomore majoring in communications. He is also the son of UNC-CH head wrestling coach C.D. Mock and a graduate of Chapel Hill High School, where he won four state titles, setting an NCHSAA record in the 4A division. After high school, Mock trained for one year as a freestyle wrestling resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

At UNC, Mock went 2-2 in the NCAA Championship last year and was ranked second on the team with 11 pins. He was tied for team leader with seven major decisions.
