WAXHAW -- -- The family of a 5-year-old Waxhaw girl who was mauled to death by pit bull dogs more than a year ago won a $20,000 settlement this week in a Union County court.

The family of Makayla Woodard, a student at Waxhaw Elementary School, had sued Michael Gordon, owner of the dogs. The suit was filed against Gordon's insurance company.

The attack happened on the morning of Jan. 12, 2011, on Rehobeth Road. Police say Woodard was attacked while she was playing in her yard. Her grandmother, Nancy Presson, then 67, was severely bitten by the dogs as she tried to save Makayla.

Gordon still faces criminal charges. He has a Feb. 16 scheduled court date, on charges of involuntary manslaughter.
