RALEIGH -- A federal judge sentenced a Sanford man to 27 years in prison in a cocaine trafficking conspiracy case.

Thomas Grandville Alston, 41, pleaded guilty to generating hundreds of thousands of dollars moving kilograms of cocaine throughout the eastern and middle districts of the state, according to a U.S. Department of Justice release.

Active in the drug trade from at least 2006 until January 2011, Alston also laundered a significant portion of the proceeds through the purchase of luxury automobiles, the release added.

Investigation of the case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Services, Criminal Investigations.
