From staff reports

DURHAM -- About 3,000 gallons of sewage sludge leaked into Ellerbe Creek Wednesday when an underground pipeline ruptured at 3:30 a.m.

The sludge spilled onto the grounds of the North Durham Water Reclamation Facility, the city's Water Management Department reported today.

Approximately 3,000 gallons of sludge flowed through the stormwater drainage system and discharged into the creek.

City crews stopped the leak by 4:30 a.m. Wednesday; sand bags were placed in Ellerbe Creek and water was pumped back to the water reclamation facility for treatment. The area is being cleaned and disinfected. There are no immediately visible adverse environmental impacts or hazards to persons or property.

The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been notified.
