Republican Sarah Cherne has announced her candidacy for Mecklenburg County commissioner from District 5, a seat now held by Republican Neil Cooksey, who is not running for re-election.

Cherne has worked with nonprofits including a role as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte. She has a masters degree in criminology from the University of South Florida and worked as a private investigator in New York.

Republican Bill Griffin, owner of Griffin Home Health Care, also is running.
