SHELBY -- -- Cleveland County Animal Control officials say a dog that was abandoned by its owner when she moved out of her rental house was forced to eat soap in order to survive, according to a story in the Gaston Gazette.

The dog, named Shadow, was figuratively just that when discovered weeks after its owner moved, according to the Gazette.

Authorities have charged Chanelle Tywanna McDowell, 23, with animal cruelty, and with abandonment of an animal, the Gazette reports.

According to police reports, McDowell moved out of her house Jan. 1, and the dog -- a mix of German shepherd and Doberman -- was discovered Jan. 25. The Gazette says the dog weighed 43 pounds, at least 20 pounds below his ideal weight, when discovered.

The dog survived and is being nursed back to health.
