Regarding the Feb. 9 letter "A phantom phrase": The writer should understand why the term Tobacco Road is used, especially in the Triangle.

This term used by most of the sports networks is not geared toward naive types whatsoever. As a lifelong native of the Triangle, I have never heard a negative word about this being used. The words are not actually inaccurate or insulting. They are a good description of where our state has been and where it is going.

True, we have done an excellent job in the fields of higher education and biotechnology. In all fairness, how do you think the majority of the Duke campus was built? It was built with tobacco money, period. At one time, how did countless students across our state get the opportunity to get a higher education whether it was in the Triangle or elsewhere? They were sent with tobacco money.

We have much to be proud of in our quest to be known as a state that does not depend on the tobacco dollar. However, the history of our tobacco industry and what it did to build us cannot be rewritten.
