Connie Lee Horton, 85, of High Point, formerly of Wake Forest, died Thursday, February 2, 2012. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Mollie Vance Horton and Della Bartow Horton. After graduating as Valedictorian of his class at Wake Forest High School, Connie went on to serve during WWII as a seaman in the US Navy. He was stationed in the Pacific and volunteered for tours of duty aboard a naval submarine with the primary responsibility of maintaining the sub’s torpedo arsenal for battle. Connie was an avid athlete and was starting tailback on his high school football team. Later he became a serious golfer with a handicap that remained below “10” for many years. Beginning in the late 1960’s, he became interested in aviation, eventually obtaining his private pilot’s license and became the owner of two single-engine planes. After he retired as an executive for the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer’s Association- a lobbying organization in Washington, DC- he began to work tirelessly as a volunteer with the M.S. Society, coordinating many large fund-raising events for the Greensboro area chapters.
A memorial service honoring Connie’s life will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, February 19, 2012 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Al Thomas officiating.
Connie is survived by his son, Dexter Horton and wife, Shirley of Youngsville; brother, Buddy Horton and wife, Evelyn Alford Horton of Wake Forest.
