Carley Aycock Gibson, 89, passed away at Four Seasons Compassion for Life Elizabeth House on February 10, 2012, after an unexpected illness. A resident of Lumberton, North Carolina, Carley had lived in Hendersonville since April 2007 with her husband, daughter and son in law.

She was born July 8, 1922 in Eureka, NC (Wayne County), she was the daughter of the late Jacob Wesley Aycock, Sr. and Ozzie Mae Yelverton Aycock, and was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Aycock Finch.

Carley attended Women’s College of North Carolina, where she was second chair violin in the orchestra. Graduating from Peace College and Hardbarger’s Business School in Raleigh, she secured her first job with Durham Life. Later, she was an accountant for the family business, Aycock and Sons Milling Company, stenographer for E and B Oil Company in Wallace, and CPA for Carolina Grainery in Lumberton, NC. In addition, she was active in politics, and served as a former registrar for Duplin County voting. More importantly, she was a terrific housewife, mother and golf champion.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, William J. (Hoot) Gibson; a son, William J. Gibson, Jr., wife Scottie of Fremont; two grandsons William Scott Gibson and Christopher Cameron Gibson, both of Raleigh; and a daughter, Anne G. Whitmire, and husband Stephen; and brother Jakie Wesley Aycock, Jr., wife Joyce of Wallace, NC, and numerous nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be held at Chestnut Street United Methodist Church in Lumberton, North Carolina with the Rev. Steve Little and Rev. Leon Newton officiating on Monday, February 13, 2012 at 2:00 PM. Entombment will follow at Gardens of Faith Mausoleum.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Ron Moffitt and staff, and Four Seasons Elizabeth House, Hospice Compassion for Life for their care during Carley’s illness.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Four Season Elizabeth House, Hospice Compassion of Life, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

A memorial service in Hendersonville for Carley will be announced at a later date.
