Winifred Mercer Walls Johnson, 89, of Wilson, died Saturday.

Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. Dan Jones and the Rev. Tom Watkins will officiate.

The family will receive friends 7:00- 8:30 p.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson.

Winifred was a graduate of Bailey High School and East Carolina Teachers College, class of 1943. She taught school in Wilson for 21 years and 9 years in Nash County. Her memberships included the Wilson Woman’s Club, a lifetime member of the North Carolina Educators Association and the local Wilson County Retired School Personnel, the American Contract Bridge League, and the Wilson Duplicate Bridge Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught a kindergarten class in the Sunday School for 24 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Merrill Walls, Sr. in 1989.

Surviving are her husband, A. Dwight Johnson; daughters, Linda Walls Ward and husband, William H. Ward of Wilson, Cindy Walls Booth and husband, Richard K. Booth of Raleigh; son, Charles M. Walls, Jr. and wife, Linda of Wilson; six grandchildren, Edwin Ward of Wilmington, Angela Ward of Raleigh, Caley and Harrison Booth of Raleigh, and Matthew and Steven Walls of Wilson.

The family would like to give a special thanks to WilMed Hospice, her caregivers at home, Mary Simms, Grace Thomas and Marie Best, and her long time friend and caregiver, Maureen Felder.
