The Pauli Murray Project named the winners of its annual Youth Prophecy Poetry Contest, which honors poets who address human-rights themes.
Winners, selected by a panel of local poets and educators, were named in two age categories. The first-place winner in the 13- to 15-year-old category was Bethany Robie for "Equality." The second-place winner was Frederick Feely III for "What Is It About My Black?" Honorable mention went to Trina Aiken for "Brave." All three attend Durham School of the Arts.
For the 16- to 19-year-old category, Chloe Brown won first place with "Free and Reduced," and there was a tie for second place with Ashton Reddish for "Our Clouds are Different Down South" and Sara Powell for "Why I Love the South." Chloe and Ashton attend Durham School of the Arts. Sara's school was unavailable.
