Ernest Stephen Barany, 81, died peacefully on Friday, February 10th at Rex Hospital in Raleigh following a long illness. Born in Passaic, NJ, on Oct. 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Stephen and Margaret Kiss Barany.

Ernie served his country honorably in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict with the 35th Fighter Squadron 8th Fighter Wing of the 5th Air Force and received the Korean Presidential Citation medal with 2 bronze stars.

He attended Mondell Institute NY and Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ and was employed with the Walter Kidde Co. for 34 years before his retirement as Assistant to the President of the Wake Forest, NC plant. After retirement he was self-employed as a Product Liability Consultant for fire protection products and pressure vessels.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, the former, Joan Targos; a son, Ernest Barany of Jersey City, NJ; surrogate son and daughter, Basil and Lana Shymonyak; a grandson, Andrew; and twin granddaughters, Christina and Anastasia Shymonyak; - all of Raleigh, as well as his beloved canine companion, “Barni”. Also surviving: his sister, Mrs. Margaret Papania of Bloomingdale, NJ; dear cousins, John and Eileen Erdelyi of Elkton, FL; and in Hungary: aunt, Mrs. Ersze Kiss; uncle, Gyula Kiss; cousin, Erzsike Verbovszki; and in Slovakia: cousins, Stefan Barany and Vilma Szollosi.

Ernest was a member of the Raleigh Elks Lodge, James B. Green Masonic Lodge #735 and Amran Temple in Raleigh.

Funeral Services will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2718 Overbrook Dr., Raleigh, NC 27608 on Wednesday, February 15th, 2012. Visitation starts at 12:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00p.m. and a reception at the Fallon Center.

Donations can be made to your favorite charity in Ernie’s honor.
