St. Augustine's men take title

HAMPTON, Va. -- The St. Augustine's men's track squad won its 14th straight men's title, and Virginia State took the women's crown Sunday in the CIAA indoor track and field championships at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

Led by most valuable player Aaron Dudley, the Falcons' men scored 135 points to take the title. Virginia State finished second with 86 and Winston-Salem State was third at 67.

Virginia State women had a winning score of 105 and Johnson C. Smith finished second with 93. St. Augustine's was third at 83.

Raleigh Sports Club

North Carolina athletics director Bubba Cunningham is the scheduled speaker for today's Raleigh Sports Club meeting.

Lines for the lunch meeting at Highland United Methodist Church (1901 Ridge Road) will open at 11:30 a.m. Admission to the noon meeting is $14 for RSC members, $20 for guests of club members.

Duke Men's Basketball

Duke freshman Austin Rivers was named ACC Rookie of the Week for the fourth consecutive week after leading the Blue Devils to a buzzer-beating 85-84 win at No. 5 North Carolina and a 73-55 win against Maryland at home. Rivers has won the award an ACC-leading seven times, breaking the Duke record of six by Luol Deng.

Duke Women's Basketball

For the seventh time this season, freshman Elizabeth Williams has been voted the ACC Rookie of the Week after guiding the Blue Devils to three league wins. Her seventh selection tied Alana Beard's school record set in the 2000-01 season.

Shaw Basketball

Shaw's men's coach Cleo Hill, Jr., was named CIAA Coach of the Week for the week ending Feb. 11. Shaw had victories over Livingstone and Winston-Salem State. Hill led his Shaw Bears to their 20th win this season and 16th straight win.

Seven from ACC named Preseason All-American

Clemson junior infielder Richie Shaffer and Duke junior pitcher Marcus Stroman head a list of seven ACC players named to the Baseball America preseason All-America team announced. Shaffer and Stroman earned first-team honors.

The second team includes North Carolina sophomore third baseman Colin Moran and Florida State senior outfielder James Ramsey. Georgia Tech junior outfielder Brandon Thomas, Miami senior catcher Peter O'Brien (named as a designated hitter) and Virginia junior pitcher Branden Kline were named to the third team.

N.C. State Women's Golf

Vivian Tsui's steady play helped move to top 10 on the individual leader board, and No. 20 N.C. State slid a spot to seventh in round two of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Monday in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Tsui shot a 1-over 73 to climb four spots in the second round. N.C. State's 8-over par 296 moves the Wolfpack to 22-over, improving on its first day 302.
