The Republican Wake County commissioners are opposed to a task force's sustainability report because they are opposed to an outside organization, in this case the U.N., influencing local policy(news story, Feb. 14). Their chief advocate for this is an outside organization fronted by right-wing conspiracy theorist Tom DeWeese, who founded his own think tank, funded by Exxon and others.

His claim to advocate for private property rights is a little hypocritical based on legislation he supported in Congress to prevent the sale of property to the U.N. He also is opposed to education reforms, global warming theories and other "conspiracies," and supports a national ID and other wacko ideas. How can anyone take this guy seriously? Of course, he's preaching to the choir.

So, does the Republican/tea party opposition to sustainability mean that they are for unsustainability and waste? Doesn't sound very "conservative" to me. And they want to spend taxpayer money on a new board to protect property rights? Who's going to pay for that? Sounds like big government to me.
