DURHAM -- As the debateover the marriage amendment builds toward the May 8 referendum, Duke University and Duke Medicine on Friday issued a joint statement underlining their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people, as well as their emphasis on tolerance.
Without specifically taking a position on Amendment One, the statement makes it clear where the institutions stand. Attributing the remarks to Michael Schoenfeld, Duke's vice president for public affairs and government relations, it says in part: "Our commitment to diversity and equality extends beyond the campus to our larger community and region."
The proposed state constitutional amendment would define marriage between a man and a woman as the only domestic legal union recognized in North Carolina.
