Lineup change pays off
After going nowhere for too long, the Deacons (12-14, 3-9) took a step forward Wednesday night with a win over Georgia Tech that left the Yellow Jackets alone in the ACC cellar. It may not have been a corner-turning moment for Wake Forest, but it was a positive step for a team in need of one.
Coach Jeff Bzdelik made two changes that will likely hold for the Deacons down the stretch. He inserted freshman guard Chase Fisher into the starting lineup in place of center Carson Desrosiers, opting for a smaller, quicker lineup. Fisher played 30 minutes, and though he went just one of nine from the field, Bzdelik wants him to keep shooting.
"The way he played showed his spirit," Bzdelik said. "I just kept telling him to shoot the ball. It's never going to go in if it doesn't go up."
Bzdelik also put the Deacons in a zone defense, which gave the Yellow Jackets trouble. It's a switch that he hopes will help the Deacons offset their depth and size issues.
