Former Westminster Lord Mayor Catherine Longworth, in red, greets Broughton High principal Stephen Mares and Choral Music Director Christine Conley as students from Broughton's vocal program look on at right. Longworth visited to school to extend an invitation for choral students to perform in London's New Year's Day Parade and Festival.
The vocal music program at Broughton High School has received an invitation to perform in next year's New Year's Day Parade and Festival in London, and it was delivered in person by a British dignitary.
A former lord mayor of the city of Westminster, Catherine Longworth, visited the school in October. Lord mayors host London's new-year festivities during their one-year appointments and serve as patrons even after their terms have ended.
The vocal program students will travel to London on Dec. 28 to rehearse and perform with a multinational choral ensemble. Only about a dozen choral groups worldwide are invited to participate each year.
To prepare for the big event, students are raising money to cover the costs of the trip. They've been selling fruit, turkeys and hams and arranging spirit nights at local restaurants, among other fundraisers.
