CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 10th-ranked Duke men's tennis team downed No. 5 Florida 4-0 Sunday in consolation play to close out the ITA Men's National Team Indoor Championship. The Blue Devils ended their indoor season in convincing fashion, defeating the Gators in the ITA Team Indoors for the second consecutive year.
With Sunday's victory, the Blue Devils conclude the indoor portion of their season with a 9-1 ledger after defeating No. 8 UCLA 4-2 in Friday's opening round and falling to No. 1 Southern California 4-0 in Saturday's quarterfinals. The loss dropped Florida to 6-3 on the season.
Duke will return to action March 3 at Virginia Commonwealth.
Wake Forest 6, South Florida 1: The Deacons made a statement in their first victory of the season, dominating the Bulls in Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest (1-3) swept doubles to take the opening point, as it has in every match this season, and then picked up quick straight-set singles wins by Ryann Cutillo at No. 2, Rebecca Siegler at No. 4 and Kathryn Talbert at No. 3 to clinch the victory.
Minnesota 5, N.C. State 2: The Wolfpack captured the doubles point by taking two of the three matches, but it was defeated by the Gophers at home.
The Wolfpack falls to 3-6, but the Gophers improve to 5-1.
The Wolfpack will return to action Sunday against Wake Forest. The match will be part of State's alumni weekend.
Duke 5, Texas 2: Duke sophomore right-hander Robert Huber held the Longhorns to two hits in six shutout innings in Austin, Texas. Huber matched a career high with six strikeouts in the win.
During the second through fifth innings, Huber retired 10 straight batters. During the second through sixth innings, Huber had a stretch where he retired 14 of 17 batters.
Designated hitter Jeff Kremer led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Wolfpack cancels game: N.C. State's game against Saint Joseph's was cancelled because of rain.
The Wolfpack will return to action against UNC Wilmington at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
N.C. State sits eighth in Puerto Rico: The Wolfpack is eighth after Day One at the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande.
The Wolfpack shot a team score of 4-over 292.
Sophomore all-American Albin Choi is tied for third after a 3-under 69, and is two shots off the pace set by Alabama's Justin Thomas.
Choi recorded four birdies and just one bogey in his round.
Tar Heels 12th in Puerto Rico: North Carolina kicked off its spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic, carding a 302, and stands in 12th place after the first round. Patrick Barrett led the Tar Heels with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 36th going into today's second round.
North Carolina 17, Richmond 6: Kara Cannizzaro tallied four goals and one assist and Laura Zimmerman scored four goals as the No. 3 Tar Heels won in light snow at Richmond.
With the victory, North Carolina improved to 3-0. The Spiders fell to 0-2.
Northwestern 13, Duke 5: Top-ranked Northwestern outscored the No. 5 Blue Devils 8-2 in the second half to earn the victory at Koskinen Stadium in Durham.
The Blue Devils (3-2) were led by sophomore Molly Quirke's three points on two goals and an assist.
North Carolina doubles up Northwestern, Northwestern State: The Tar Heels beat Northwestern 5-0 and Northwestern State 1-0 in a resumed game from Friday evening.
UNC struck early against the Wildcats, with Kelli Wheeler drawing a leadoff walk and Ally Blake unleashing a two-run home run to left-center field. Logan Foulks followed with a solo shot over the left-field fence, pushing the Tar Heels ahead 3-0.
Against the Demons, the Tar Heels resumed their game from Friday, which was halted in the top of the fifth inning because of rain.
North Carolina doubles up Sacred Heart, The Citadel: North Carolina closed out the dual portion of its schedule with wins in Charleston, S.C., against Sacred Heart 55-0 and The Citadel 26-12 to finish the season 6-14.
The Tar Heels opened over Sacred Heart in a dual that featured seven Tar Heels pins. The win marked the sixth time in school history that a Carolina squad reached the 50-point plateau.
