San Jose Sharks left wing Ryane Clowe (29) and Detroit Red Wings left wing Justin Abdelkader fight during the third period of their game in Detroit on Sunday. The Red Wings beat the Sharks 3-2.
DETROIT -- Detroit won its 23rd straight at Joe Louis Arena, setting an NHL mark for home dominance by holding on to beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 Sunday.
The Red Wings won their sixth straight game, all in a homestand, and have an NHL-high 84 points.
Detroit, which broke the league's single-season record of 20 Tuesday, surpassed the 22 wins in a row the Boston Bruins had over two seasons more than eight decades ago.
Detroit coach Mike Babcock said goaltender Jimmy Howard, who has been out two-plus weeks with a broken right index finger, will start in the next game Tuesday night at Chicago.
Sabres 6, Penguins 2: Forward Derek Roy was upset with himself after being robbed by Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's pad save in the second period. He didn't miss on his next opportunity.
Roy redirected Jason Pominville's centering pass through Fleury's legs for a short-handed goal as part of Buffalo's three-goal third period in securing the win against Pittsburgh.. It was a game in which the Sabres snapped a four-game skid (0-3-1) and Roy finished with two goals and an assist to enjoy his best outing in nearly four months.
Blackhawks 3, Blues 1: Dave Bolland got an unlikely assist and Chicago won in its return to the United Center after a long road trip.
Bolland's centering attempt in the third period hit the stick of St. Louis' leading scorer David Backes and went in the net for the go-ahead score Sunday as Chicago rallied with three final-period goals for a victory.
Chicago couldn't solve St. Louis goalie Brian Elliott for the first two periods as he was working on his second straight shutout. But Duncan Keith scored a tying goal, and then Bolland put the Blackhawks ahead. Marian Hossa added an empty-netter with 49 seconds left.
Wild 2, Bruins 0: No lead feels safe for offensively challenged Minnesota these days.
But for one game, at least, Niklas Backstrom made his team's advantage look commanding.
Backstrom made a career-high 48 saves for his fourth shutout of the season to lead the Wild past Boston.
Matt Cullen and newly recalled Chad Rau each scored second-period goals for Minnesota, which won for only the second time this month, and Backstrom did the rest to frustrate the Bruins.
Ducks 2, Panthers 0: Teemu Selanne scored in the first period and Jonas Hiller made 31 saves in Anaheim's victory against Florida.
Jose Theodore made 26 saves for Florida. The Panthers lost for the third consecutive game.
Devils 3, Canadiens 1: Zach Parise, David Clarkson and Matt Taormina scored and Martin Brodeur made 21 saves to help New Jersey beat Montreal.
The Devils improved to 34-20-4 with their third straight victory and jumped Pittsburgh and Philadelphia into fourth in the Eastern Conference.
The Canadiens have lost eight straight at home against New Jersey. The Canadiens last beat the Devils in Montreal on March 11, 2008.
