RALEIGH -- Authorities arrested a Raleigh man today for selling vehicles with altered odometers on Craigslist.
Francis Marimo, 38, was arrested after police searched his home and seized numerous items connecting him to various car sales.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles License and Theft Bureau investigated Marimo for months before arresting him and charging him with two counts of odometer fraud, two counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of acting as a motor vehicle dealer without a license.
Seized from Marimo's home were four Honda odometer clusters, $17,200 in cash, keys to numerous vehicles, motor vehicle titles and paperwork pertaining to the sale of vehicles.
The investigation began when a customer reportedly bought a 2005 Honda Odyssey from a Craigslist ad and later determined the mileage had been changed. The License and Theft Bureau placed Marimo under surveillance and observed him traveling to different states to purchase vehicles, then returning to North Carolina and offering them on Craigslist after changing the odometer.
Marimo posted $3,000 bond Tuesday afternoon.
