I am proud to consider myself a part of the Great Schools in Wake Coalition. GSIW has been a responsible voice asking for a public disclosure of the cost accounting behind the new student assignment plan and the proposed transportation plan; that is what GSIW was asking for in the press release that appears to have gotten under Superintendent Tony Tata's skin (news story, Feb. 21).

Tata has said transportation costs will rise, but then turns around and trumpets cost savings. Surely he owes the public a complete financial analysis. I hardly call asking him to be fiscally prudent an attack on his character.

To the contrary, Tata's true character was more clearly displayed by his email bullying of school board members Christine Kushner and Susan Evans. This inappropriate attack on their affiliation with GSIW is particularly disingenuous, given that the first group that he spoke to upon his arrival was the Wake County Taxpayers Association, a conservative organization with which former Board Chair Ron Margiotta was very involved. Did Tata ask Margiotta to disassociate with that group? I think not.

Free speech is a cherished right, and dissent is essential in a democracy. Being associated with an organization that asks the right questions and advocates for the good of our entire community is something of which I am immensely proud.
