John Albert Dew, Sr., 85, of Raleigh died Monday at Rex Hospital. John was born in Nash County, to the late William Albert Dew and Maggie Elizabeth Murray Dew. After graduating from Bailey High School in 1944, he entered the US Army. During World War II, John served in the European Theater with the 13th Armored Div., and was awarded two Bronze Stars. Following the war, he settled in Raleigh and began his career with Warren Distributing Co., where he worked for the next 46 ½ years. While at Warren Distributing Co., he received the Dealerscope Pride Award for the Southeastern United States on several occasions.

He was a member of Saint Marks United Methodist Church since 1963, serving in many capacities. John was very active with Boys Scout Troop 344 for over 40 years. His second home was the downtown Raleigh YMCA, where he was a member for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Raleigh Elk’s Club.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 58 years, Maxine Finch Dew of Raleigh; son, John A. Dew, Jr. and wife Robin, of Hiddenite, NC; daughter, Kathy Dew Gwinn of Raleigh; brother, Paul Dew and wife Alice of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Adam Dew, and Elizabeth and Matthew Gwinn.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 11am at Saint Marks United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Road Raleigh. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 10-11am at the church. Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 401 Harrison Oaks Blvd. Suite 200, Cary, NC, 27513, or to the Boy Scouts of America / Occoneechee Council, 3231 Atlantic Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27604.
