An applicant to be a state trooper collapsed and died during a physical fitness test today.

Isiah Hardy Nixon, 22, of 550 Gaslight Trail, Wendell, had just finished a 1.5-mile run in Raleigh when he collapsed at about 12:30 p.m., according to State Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Gordon. Medical personnel were on the scene and tended to him until emergency services units arrived.

He was taken to WakeMed's Raleigh campus where he was pronounced dead, Gordon said.

The physical fitness testing is used along with a written exam to evaluate applicants and determine whether they are qualified to be trained to become state troopers.
