I'm a retired grandmother who has lived in Wake County for a long time. Like many others, I am deeply distressed by two reports in the Feb. 21 paper: "Wake board backs gay-marriage ban" and "Wake commissioners balk at sustainability report." It seems the GOP members of the Wake Board of Commissioners are putting politics above public service.
The board's responsibilities do not include state marriage rights. Yet they passed a marriage resolution that is divisive, inappropriate and gratuitously insulting to many Wake residents. Why? For political points?
On the other hand, the board's responsibilities do include county Environmental Services. Protecting and sustaining Wake's beautiful and vulnerable environment is not part of some international "collectivist" plot, as commissioners chairman Paul Coble insinuates: it's the county board's job. And clean air and clean water aren't partisan: everybody needs them. That the board is willing to play politics with these issues is bad news for the county's future public health and quality of life.
