CHAPEL HILL -- Orange County commissioners killed a proposal Tuesday night to put a waste transfer station in the county, then set a date to close the county's current landfill in 2013.

After hearing comments in a packed meeting room, commissioners unanimously rejected a proposal by Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton to build a transfer station on the northwest corner of the junction of Interstate 40 and N.C. 86.

Chilton proposed the site earlier this year as a way to save money and keep from having to truck waste to a Durham transfer station. But commissioners refused, then unanimously voted to close the Eubanks Road landfill on June 30, 2013. Commissioners asked county staff to start negotiations with Durham to truck its waste there.

"I'm really tired of municipal problems being solved by putting them in rural areas," Commissioner Barry Jacobs said. "I would encourage Mayor Chilton to come back with a site in Carrboro."
