RALEIGH -- A candidate for a position with the N.C. Highway Patrol collapsed and died during a physical fitness test Wednesday.
Isiah Hardy Nixon, 22, of 550 Gaslight Trail, Wendell, had just finished a 1.5-mile run when he collapsed about 12:30 p.m., according to patrol spokesman Sgt. Jeff Gordon. Medical personnel were on the scene and treated him until emergency services units arrived.
He was taken to WakeMed's Raleigh campus, where he was pronounced dead, Gordon said.
The physical fitness testing is used along with a written exam to evaluate patrol applicants and determine whether they are qualified to be trained to become state troopers.
