Published: February 28, 2012

A Charlotte attorney with connections to the Occupy Charlotte movement is challenging U.S. Rep. Mel Watt for his District 12 congressional seat. Matt Newton, a Democrat who specializes in criminal defense, filed his candidacy papers on Monday. They will face each other in the May 8 Democratic primary.

Watt, a Charlotte Democrat, is running for his 11th term in office. He said he’s confident he will retain the seat.

“Unless he changes his first name to Cam, I’m not going to worry about it right now,” Watt said referring to the popular Carolina Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton.
