Rocky Mount man faces tax evasion charges

Published: March 31, 2012

— A Rocky Mount man is facing charges that he tried to evade state income taxes in eight years by understating his income in returns he filed with the Department of Revenue.

A Department of Revenue investigator arrested Charles Lewis Woods Jr., 64, of 729 Albemarle Ave. on Friday. He was brought to Wake County to face the charges because state government is headquartered here.

Arrest warrants allege that in 2003, Woods filed an income tax return understating his 2002 income; in 2004 he understated his 2003 income; in 2008, he understated income in returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007; in 2009 he understated his 2008 income; and in 2011 he understated his income for 2009 and 2010.

The warrant gives no details of why some returns were filed when they were or whether Woods was not a North Carolina resident in 2004 or filed a correct return for that year. The charges also give no details about how much income the Department of Revenue believes Woods did not report or how much tax was involved.

His bond was set at $40,000.
