Canes' Cup in '06 added to N.C. sports hall

The Carolina Hurricanes’ 2006 Stanley Cup championship will be added to the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame’s “Great Moments” series, it was announced Thursday.

The Canes’ Cup run will be recognized during a May 9 reception at the N.C. Museum of History, along with with Jim Beatty’s sub-four-minute mile, and will become a permanent part of the Hall’s exhibit in the museum. ...

Canes captain Eric Staal has been voted the winner of the 2011-2012 Steve Chiasson Award by his teammates. The team award is given annually to the player who best exemplifies determination and dedication and is an inspiration to his teammates through his performance and approach to the game.

The award is named for the former Canes defenseman who died in a car accident in 1999. It was the first time Staal has been selected. ...

Staal on Thursday was presented the team’s most valuable player award by the Carolina chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Defenseman Jay Harrison was the winner of the newly renamed Josef Vasicek Award for cooperation with the media who cover the team.

Vasicek, a member of the 2006 Cup champions, died in a plane crash in Russia in September.
