From Staff Reports

Traffic remains heavily congested after lanes reopened on eastbound I-40 at an accident site near U.S. 1/64.

As of 6:20 p.m., traffic backed up nine miles from the accident site to RDU. A press release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation advised motorists to exit I-40 onto Wade Avenue and then take I-440 west back to I-40, past the accident site.

An initial alert on the NCDOT website indicated that all lanes were closed on eastbound I-40 between exits 293 and 291. The press release said that one lane had remained open.
