Three current Tar Heels and three signees were drafted on the final day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday. Juniors Cody Penny and Tommy Coyle were taken in the 16th round and R.C. Orlan was selected in the 30th round.
Penny was taken by the Cleveland Indians before Coyle was tabbed by the Tampa Bay Rays. Orlan was selected by the Washington Nationals.
Three 2013 signees were also drafted on the third and final day of the MLB Draft led by Landon Lassiter, a High Point, N.C. native, who was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 16th round. Skye Bolt was tabbed by the Nationals in the 26th round and Korey Dunbar was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 39th round.
Moss named Freshman All- America: North Carolina freshman right-hander Benton Moss was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America as announced by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Moss finished his first year with a 7-2 record and a starter-low 1.94 ERA.
Elon: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jim Stokes was the first Elon player selected in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when picked by the Indians in the 22nd round. He was joined by junior catcher Alex Swim, who was chosen by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 36th round.
Golf
Duke Women: Following qualifying over the last month, Duke alum Jennie Lee joined Brittany Lang and Amanda Blumenherst to participate in the 2012 U.S. Womens Open, which will take place July 5-8 at the Original Championship Course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin. Duke Men: Former Blue Devil standouts Kevin Streelman and Joe Ogilvie each advanced through sectional qualifying and will be in the field for the U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif. (June 11-17).
Campbell: Former Campbell standout David Mathis qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday at Columbus, Ohio. A native of Winston-Salem and Raleigh resident, Mathis led the Camels to consecutive Big South Conference titles in 1993 and 1994.
Basketball
N.C. State: The Wolfpack is one of eight programs slated to participate in the 2012 Puerto Rico Tip-Off, November 15-18 in San Juan. Joining the Pack in the event are Akron, Massachusetts, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Providence, Tennessee and UNC-Asheville.
Duke: New Orleans Hornets forward and former Blue Devil Lance Thomas was added to the 2012 USA Mens Select Team roster, USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo announced.
Tennis
North Carolina: The Tar Heels added Nelson Vick of Grafton, Wis., to its roster for 2012-13. He will have two years of eligibility.
