Restaurant news: A new place for ice cream in Wake Forest

Published: June 7, 2012

Ice cream shop now open in Wake Forest

The Wake Forest Dairy Depot, an ice cream and sandwich shop, is now open.

It offers 24 flavors of soft-serve ice cream plus the classics, including twist cones, banana splits, cream soda floats and cherry Cokes. The specialty sundaes include a Krispy Kreme sundae, a Rice Krispie Treat sundae and an “Engine Spark” sundae with Pop Rocks.

Owner Karrie Mathues, a former school teacher, and her husband Jim, an occupational therapist, have lived in North Raleigh since 1997. The couple saw a need for a “mom-and-pop” ice cream stand. The train depot-like building on Rogers Road across from Heritage Elementary offers walk-up service and has a drive-thru.

“You don’t have to offload all your kids if you just want a hot dog and a shake,” Karrie Mathues says.

The shop is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, noon-9 p.m. Sunday. For more information, go to http://wfdairydepot.com/.

Krave celebrates grand opening Saturday

Krave Restaurant and Lounge, a new late-night spot in Raleigh’s Glenwood South area, will celebrate its grand opening starting at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The restaurant is open Tuesday-Saturday at 5 p.m. The full menu is offered until 4 a.m. on weekends. Late at night, it becomes more of a lounge atmosphere with deejays. Chef Tom Ferguson, owner of Durham Catering Co., has signed a letter of intent to open Rise, a biscuit and doughnut shop, near The Streets at Southpoint in Durham. Ferguson is hoping to open by Aug. 1 at the location at 8200 Renaissance Parkway, Suite 1003, near the Target and Petco.

And if you want to get an early taste of Rise offerings, Ferguson and crew will be giving away about 1,000 doughnuts starting at 10 a.m. Sunday at Durham Catering Co., 3710 Shannon Road, Suite 117, Durham.

Check the Facebook page for details on flavors: facebook.com/risebiscuitsdonuts. Ferguson says a gluten-free, vegan doughnut will be among the offerings.
