Corporate tax tunes

Published: June 12, 2012

All right, we get the picture. Important North Carolina legislators think the state’s corporations, when they pay taxes, are being forced to carry entirely too heavy a load. This tracks with Republican Party wisdom, and the GOP happens to be in charge at the Legislative Building.

Republicans tend to think that cutting taxes, especially on corporations and the affluent, is a shortcut to prosperity. Well, at least it makes GOP politicians more popular among those tax-cut beneficiaries. So there’s now a move to make it harder for North Carolina to collect taxes from multistate companies that duck their obligations via tax shelters set up for that purpose. That just puts more pressure on ordinary taxpayers to fund essential services.

The state’s tax code is long since due for an overhaul. But Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis suggests that when it comes to corporate income taxes, the best option is to get rid of them. This is more music to the ears of Tar Heel business execs – but how would giving companies a pass make the overall tax code fairer? It wouldn’t.
