One Johnston County teen died and another was airlifted to the hospital Thursday night when the driver lost control of her vehicle on Princeton Kenly Road, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Sarah Elizabeth Earp, 16, was speeding when she lost control of her Chevy sport utility vehicle around 8 p.m., according to Trooper J.T. Smith. The SUV ran off the road, and Earp overcorrected and hit a ditch. The SUV then went airborne and struck a tree.
Earp was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earp's 17-year-old passenger, Stephanie Heaton, was airlifted to WakeMed, authorities said.
Along with speeding, troopers think inexperience was a factor in the crash.
