It won’t take the Carolina Hurricanes long to see how they can handle the rigors of the road next season.

The NHL’s 2012-2013 schedule was released today and the Canes’ opener will be Oct. 13 at Winnipeg against the Jets in a Southeast Division game. Carolina then stays on the road for games against Vancouver, Anaheim, the Stanley Cup champion L.A. Kings, San Jose and then the Boston Bruins.

The Hurricanes will play their home opener at PNC Arena – again pushed back to avoid going head-to-head with the N.C. State Fair – on Friday, Oct. 26 against the New York Rangers. That’s followed by a Sunday matinee against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Canes’ opening road trip will be their longest of the season. The longest home stand will start in mid-February, when they play seven straight at PNC Arena – two of the games against the Bruins.

The Canes host the Detroit Red Wings on Dec. 26, and will have a New Year’s Eve game at PNC Arena (8 p.m.) against Montreal.

In contrast to the start of the season, Carolina plays 17 of its last 26 games at home. The Canes, who have missed the playoffs the past three years, end the regular season Friday, April 12 at home against the Montreal Canadiens.
