CARY — The Galaxy Cinema, a favorite of local cinephiles, has been put on notice: A developer’s plans place a new supermarket square on top of the theater.

The plans, submitted June 14 by an engineering company to the town of Cary, call for the demolition of the Galaxy and the construction of a 53,000-square-foot Harris Teeter.

Galaxy calls itself a six-screen art house. It has carved a niche by airing foreign films, indie flicks and cult-favorite television series. But it’s perhaps best known as a hub of Indian-American culture in the Triangle. Bollywood film screenings pay about a quarter of the theater’s revenues, an owner told The News & Observer in 2009.

The theater is part of a southeast Cary shopping center that straddles Cary Towne Boulevard at the road’s intersection with S.E. Maynard Road. According to the plans, the developer also would demolish the 56,000-square-foot office building on the complex’s southeast corner.

The shopping center was built in 1975, according to property records. Representatives of Galaxy Cinema were not available for immediate comment. Neither employees of G.T.T. Corporation, the listed owner of 23 acres at the center, nor of Village Square Limited Partnership, a company listed on the site plans, were available for comment. A representative of Harris Teeter could not immediately comment on the documents.

Town of Cary staff members are conducting their first review of the plans. The project doesn’t appear to require approval by the Cary Town Council.
