RALEIGH — Shawn Rychcik, formerly of Boston University, has been hired as N.C. State’s softball coach, athletics director Debbie Yow announced Friday.
Rychcik, the winningest coach in Boston history with a 271-159 record in eight seasons, guided the Terriers to NCAA Regionals and America East Conference championships in three of the last four seasons.
Rychcik is also a member of U.S. women’s national team coaching pool as an assistant coach in developing national team and future Olympic players.
As a player, Rychcik played for the U.S. men’s national team from 1994-2002.
Baseball
USA Baseball announced the selection of Florida’s Mike Zunino as the recipient of the Golden Spikes Award Friday in Secaucus, N.J.
N.C. State’s Carlos Rodon and Stanford’s Mike Appel were the other finalists for the award, given to the nation’s top amateur baseball player.
Women’s golf
Leah Wigger has been named assistant coach at North Carolina, coach Jan Mann announced Friday. Wigger replaces Patricia Earley who resigned to pursue other interests.
Wigger played at Virginia from 2003-07 before moving on to play professionally for five years. Last year, she served as a volunteer coach for the Tar Heels.
