UNC opens Maui trip with Mississippi State

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina’s path to the Maui Invitational championship has become clearer. The Tar Heels will begin play in Maui against Mississippi State on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m., UNC announced today.

The game between the Tar Heels and Bulldogs is the first for both teams in the championship round of the 2012 EA Sports Maui Invitational. UNC’s first game in the event will be against Florida Atlantic in the Smith Center on Nov. 11.

The winner between UNC and Mississippi State will play either Butler or Marquette on Nov. 20. On the other side of the Maui Invitational bracket are Illinois, Southern California and Texas, among others.

UNC will be competing for the sixth time in the Maui Invitational. The Tar Heels won the 1999, 2004 and 2008, and finished second in 1989 and 1995. The Heels last played against Mississippi State on March 20, 2010, when UNC defeated the Bulldogs, 76-74, in the second round of the NIT.
