Published: August 8, 2012

A Marine based at Camp Lejeune was killed in combat in Afghanistan on Monday, the Defense Department announced today.

Cpl. Daniel L. Linnabary II was killed in Helmand province. Linnabary, 23, lived in Hubert, an Onslow County community just east of Camp Lejeune.

Linnabary was assigned to the 2nd Tank battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Linnabary was a third generation Marine whose graduation from basic training in San Diego was the subject of an article on the Marine Corps website in 2009. His father said at the time that Linnabary aspired to be a Marine officer.

“He wants to be a Marine,” his father said. “It’s all he’s ever talked about; it’s all he’s ever known.”
