Smithfield police shot and killed a Maryland man who, they say, refused to cooperate with police demands to drop his handgun after assaulting another man on Sunday night.
Darryl C. Wiggins, 47, of Baltimore, MD, was shot and killed by Smithfield police Sunday night, according to a report from Lt. R.K. Powell, of the Smithfield police.
Officers were dispatched to 208 North St. around 9:30 p.m. to respond to a report of gunshots. When they arrived, they found two men outside an apartment. Wiggins was holding a handgun, and the other man, who has not been identified, appeared to have been assaulted, according to Powell.
Both men were transported to Johnston Medical Center.
Wiggins died while being treated. The second man was treated for head injuries sustained before police arrived.
The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the use of force in the incident. The police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on alternative duty assignments until the investigation is completed, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
