Enloe at No. 1 Garner
7 p.m., Trojan Stadium
New Enloe coach Mike Massey has a tough debut against the defending 4AA Eastern champions. Garner, No. 1 in the N&O preseason poll, returns about half of their starters from a year ago, but are evaluating runners.
No. 2 Leesville Road at No. 16 Panther Creek
7:30 p.m., Catamount Stadium
Leesville, which was undefeated in the regular season in 2011, has to replace its offensive line, but the Pride’s Braxton Berrios is one of the area’s most exciting players. New Panther Creek coach Sean Crocker fields a strong offensive line.
No. 3 Hillside at New Bern
7:30 p.m., Caruso Coates
Durham Hillside has produced a string of outstanding teams and is the preseason favorite again in the PAC-Six 4A. New Bern is expected to have one of the top teams in the state. Bears quarterback Josh Taylor and N.C. State commit receiver Bra’lon Cherry are exceptional.
No. 4 Wakefield at Durham Riverside
7 p.m., Linny Wrenn Field
Wakefield may be under-ranked at No. 4 in the N&O poll. Quarterback Connor Mitch has averaged close to 300 yards passing during his career. The Wolverines have an exceptional corps of receivers. Riverside will try to pressure the passer.
No. 5 Middle Creek at Northern Durham
7 p.m., Durham County Stadium
Northern coach Gary Merrill had exceptional success at Northern before retiring and is working on rebuilding the Knights’ program. New Middle Creek coach Mike Casellano has quarterback David Salmon, who passed for 2,906 yards in 2011.
No. 8 Southeast Raleigh at Millbrook
7 p.m., Wildcats Stadium
New Southeast coach Marvin Burke will closely evaluate his quarterbacks after going against what is expected to be stout Millbrook defense. Millbrook has a big-play threat, receiver Corey Cooper.
No. 9 Fuquay-Varina at No. 14 West Johnston
7:30 p.m., Wildcats Stadium
Fuquay’s Carlton Bridges rushed for 1,600 yards in 2011 and slowing him down will be one of West Johnston’s primary concerns. West quarterback Justin Carroll is expected to attack the Fuquay secondary, which is led by ball hawk Garrett Suggs.
No. 12 Cary at No. 17 Broughton
7 p.m., Caps Stadium
Cary coach Ben Kolstad has a strong defensive nucleus back that could make it tough for Broughton to move the ball.
